“Ahem-Ahem!" You guys
must be wondering what went so long for me to write my next article. So let me
tell you, I was scrutinizing on subject that we might know but ignored most of
the time. To be more precise, now-a-days Mumbai city facing a very heavy rainfall.
It made mumbaikars hassle in every aspects of day to day life such as huge
traffic on roads with big potholes in between, flooded railway tracks due to
which trains got delayed , gushing of
nallas and much more. Since mumbaikars at one side got relieved with hot &
dusty summer climate, on other side of it got stuck with flooded rains. They
must be thinking is there any way to limit or restrict the rainfall.
Raining season
is amazing season of all where love blossoms, cherished and grow. When clouds
hug the whole sky gives the shadow of dark and air playing merry go round the trees,
the cool breezes dances around the soul
& body of lakes and ponds, it generates ripples truly giving a spectacular scenery.
A rain drop on leaf petals seems like small pearl crystals decorated on green
platter. At one point of time it looks beautiful but when it changes to other
side of its face, seems like invitation to disaster. This reminds me of a 26th
July 2005, when people suffered heavy losses of lives and assets. I still get goose
bumps whenever it reminds me of scary evening. Let me tell you what I have
experience in that scary evening.
I was second year engineering student which
hardly have time to rest at home, always loaded with assignments, viva’s ,
lectures and classes. Fortunately, it was off for me on 26th July
2005 for some reason. Hanging near the window gazing the sky, watching the
drizzling of rain, feeling the cool breezes on my face and enjoying every moment
of it being at home but of no knowledge what will come next. Slowly the climate
start changing, the clouds became more intense dark seems like annoyed of something,
the rapid flow of rainfall, air blowing with full force like as if it going to
be a twister, the grumpy cloud with evil
noise hitting among each others. In meanwhile, electricity went off, I was
trying to distinguish why it’s happening, and incidentally my eyes fall on
corridor of our home, found what? Water
rapidly moving inside with no barrier in between. It was shocking to see the
water flooded on floor in no time.
I called out my
mom and bhai(brother) ,who too doesn’t have knowledge about the flooded water.
Our feet’s were dipped in water. For some moment we were in state of statue
mode, thinking of what to do next, figuring out how can a water come inside when
there is no way of coming in. My mom rushed to next door neighbor who was
facing the similar problem like us. We were helpless trying to remove water
with mob but of no use, our efforts went in vain.
Till the night
at around 11pm, our home, society looks like half Titanic ship sunk in ocean,
surrounded with muddy water. Candle lighted in our room, silence was spread across
everywhere seems like no living being exist. Three of us climbed of our compound
wall waiting for my father to come home since he went office in morning and we don’t
have clue about him where he was. We were scared but hopeful of him returning home.
There was no space in home to sit on, all sofas, chair, table were floating. We
were in fear of being drown; in fact nobody of us knew swimming. I was thinking
what more worst can happen then this. How about those people who live in slum area,
how they will be managing their small kids, infants and family.It was terrific;
nobody was prepared for these worst scenario.
At around
12:30 am my dad came home full wetted from top to bottom. He managed to come in
this flooded water from town to lower side of city by walking so far. We felt
relieved after seeing him. It was not only us but the whole society suffered
the same. The dark night took so many lives with him and we were lucky to get away
safe. As the night passed by, the sunshine come across the window waking up from disaster, rain was stopped,
birds were trying to sing ,might be they are confused whether to fly happily or
to feel sad about their losses(yes, even their nest were destroyed by winds and
rains).Sky was clear and clouds were hidden seems like normal.
As the day begins,
people came out of their houses with sad faces looks like heavy losses of their
materials. Everybody was cleaning their houses, removing water as we too did it.
It was bad experience as if we have seen death standing in front of us. Life is
so precious, so please don’t underestimate it. The lesson that I learned was “Live
everyday as it comes”.
Next day when
electricity came back, we switch on the television, news channel got a hot
promoting news for their TRP’s. Many lives hit by Mumbai city flood, many strive
for life, suffered victim were searching their missing ones, some people
drowned in flood, some were killed. Lot of hues and cry spread, but no one was
able to answer the question: who is responsible for this disaster, who will
recover this? Flood left the footprints not only in city but also in heart of
people.
Recently same
thing happen in Uttarakhand (U.P), heavy losses of lives, thousands of people
drowned and killed. People from other state, city were come for pilgrimage but
lost their lives. Is it again a punishment from God or something else what we
call as disaster? Government promise to help the victims who suffered, as the
same promised was done during Mumbai flood but nothing happened. If Government helps
the victim with food, shelter and compensate with money, the question here is
how it will compensate the loss of life?
We never know
what life brings us but we can make each day a happy and brightful with our
loved ones.
“Thank you guys for reading this
article with so much of patience. But honestly the fear of drown in that night
is still persist in my mind.”
